"Positano is a dream place that isn't quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone." This was John Steinbach's description of Positano in 1953. Little has changed in Positano since Steinbach's visit. It is an ancient Amalfi hill town perched implausibly in many layers on the sheer cliffs that plunge to the sea.
Baroque stuccoed houses fading to rose, coral, and golds are packed along tiny streets and adjacent endless steps. You must climb steps wherever you go in this atmospheric sea town. Our hotel, La Albergo Miramare, was located 150 steps down from the nearest road, or 200 steps from the beach.
This was our "side" of Positano. Our view includes the famous La Sirenuse in the distance and the church of Santa Maria dell'Assunta in the foreground. Lights glow softly as the sun is nearly set. But the remaining sunlight still illuminates the improbable turquoise and cobalt of the ocean.
Standing on the patio of our hotel, you could hear the sounds of the rolling surf and the occasional sound of a boat horn, while breathing in the soft fragrance of lemon blooms: a perfect view of a magical town.
