In French, Notre Dame means Our Lady. The cathedral of Paris and the seat of the Archbishop, this finest example of French Gothic architecture took almost 200 years to complete since it was begun in 1160.
It was the first cathedral to have flying buttresses. The use of stained glass and sculpture gave the cathedral a more natural look than previous Romanesque churches, a revolutionary notion in its day.
Having suffered damage from age and even vandalism, the cathedral has an amazing history to rival any country. It is a source of reverence and fascination. On our first visit, I shot many rolls of film hoping to find its perfect portrait.
This eastern view is against a sunset sky turning the limestone facades to gold, rose, purple, and even blue in the shadows. The Seine glows turquoise in the fading light.
