Portraits

Working With the Artist...

When a commission is arranged, the artist will write a letter of agreement with the client describing the content of the commission and the estimated finish date. Half of the fee is paid with the letter and the balance upon delivery of the portrait.

After a thorough discussion with the client as to content, possible poses, background, clothing, style of the final portrait--formal or casual, the artist will arrange for a photo session with the subject. The pose and expression are chosen during a subsequent meeting.

Next, simple black and white pencil sketches are made of two possible poses for the portrait. Once a final selection is made, a color sketch is painted in oil about 1/4 to 1/3 of the size of the finished portrait. This color sketch helps the client visualize how the final portrait will appear.

The final portrait is begun following the acceptance of the color sketch. A final sitting with the portrait subject may be arranged when the portrait is nearly finished. Final payment is due upon delivery. The painting goes home for a few weeks and a coating of archival quality varnish is applied after a three to four week curing period.

Framing Your Portrait...

If you desire assistance with choosing an appropriate frame, the artist will be happy to consult with you and refer you to a qualified framer.

Portrait Fees...

The fees are based upon the amount of the figure that will be visible in the finished portrait: head only, the figure from the waist up including hands, full length, seated or standing, and multiple figures. The cost includes one photographic session and all materials and supplies to create the portrait. Portraits are rendered on archival quality canvas mounted on wooden stretchers.

Additional charges may be made for complex backgrounds, additional figures, pets, additional photographic sessions, shipping and handling, and travel and overnight accommodations. California state sales tax is charged on all fees.

Multiple figures

If multiple figures are desired in the same painting, prices are based on the above list per figure minus $500. For example, if one figure is seated and visible from the waist up, while another is standing, visible head to toe, the total cost would be:

                                                                $4,500 + $6,500 - $500 = $10,500

Additional Charges

· Complex backgrounds other than simple vignette, will have to be negotiated between the client and the
   artist.

· Any photographic charges beyond one sitting or enlargements will be billed to the client.

Terms

Half of the fee plus applicable sales tax is due at the time of the portrait commission. The balance plus any additional charges are due on completion and delivery of portrait.

The client has one week to return the portrait for minor changes. After allowing three to four weeks for the paint to cure, the artist will apply a sealing coat of varnish to protect the portrait for a lifetime of enjoyment.

How Long Will the Portrait Take to Finish?

The artist will give you an estimated completion date at the time of commissioning. This estimate is based on the client's availability for the initial photographic sitting, reviewing photos and sketches, and other meetings needed as the portrait progresses. Generally, a portrait will take four to six weeks to finish following the client's approval of the color sketch.
